Ball bearing shims or
wave washers
Introduction
Ball bearing shims are usually used to compensate for tolerances in rotating components. Wave washers are used on the one hand to bridge production-related dimensional deviations and on the other hand to subject an installed axle or shaft to a defined axial preload.
Manufacturing
While wave washers are simple in terms of their geometry, their manufacturing is extremely complex. The requirements do not end with pure geometric considerations. The required spring force characteristics present the development department with special challenges. Years of experience and the use of FEM programmes ultimately lead to the realisation of customer requirements.

Materials
For general applications, LANG+MENKE uses bainitic-hardened carbon steels. Hardening takes place after stamping. For special applications, ball bearing shims are also martensitically hardened in an oil bath and subsequently tempered. This allows particularly tight tolerances to be achieved.
Spring-hardened stainless steel alloys are also used for special rust-free applications.
